Dessie Grimes Greenwood
April 30, 1920 - February 8, 2015

Lucy Dessie Greenwood departed this life on February 8, 2015. She was born April 30, 1920 in Abbott, AR to Melvin G. Grimes and Nora Oliger Grimes. Dess was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 63 years, Brooks O’Neill Greenwood; one sister, Emmie Rodgers; brothers, Jess, Bud, Bill, Bobby, Calvin and Chester Grimes; granddaughter, Gena Ward Wilson; and a special nephew, Travis Rodgers.

Dess grew up in the Glendale area and graduated the 1940 valedictorian of Woodlawn High School. She married her husband, Brooks, on April 8, 1942. She worked at Cohen’s Department Store in Pine Bluff and Van-Atkins in Monticello. She became a member of Pauline Missionary Baptist Church in the early 1960’s, was a member of Esther Circle, was a VBS volunteer for over 60 years, and was the card sender for Pauline Church for over 20 years. She was also a member of Eastern Star.

Dess was blessed with a green thumb and loved her flowers, her garden, and her yardwork. She was a wonderful cook and loved cooking everyone’s favorite dish. Her favorite pastime was fishing whether in the ocean or in a pond. Dess was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Survivors include three sons, Charles “Butch” Greenwood of Little Rock, Robert Greenwood (Nancy) and Steven Greenwood (Benette) of Monticello; a daughter, Patricia Abbott (Tommy) of Monticello; one brother, Fred Grimes of Houston, TX; one sister, Dorothy Howard of New Augusta, MS; grandchildren, Landon, Misty, Todd, Matt, Tyler, Jonathan, Jim, and Miranda; eleven great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
