Sybil Doster Black
September 20, 1928 - January 4, 2015

Sybil Christine Doster Black, 86 of Monticello, passed away Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. She was born September 20, 1928 in Cleveland County to the late John Fred Doster and Beulah Mae Gavin Doster.

She was the widow of Charles Fay “Bud” Black. Sybil attended school in Woodlawn, AR and often bragged that the smartest people on earth were educated in Cleveland County. During her senior year of high school, she was voted “Miss Woodlawn”. Following high school, Sybil attended A & M College. She taught school for many years as a young woman in Selma, Lake Village and Greenville, MS. She also served as secretary for Greenville High School for a period of time. Sybil was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Monticello and a member of The Eastern Star.

She had a kind heart and unselfishly made sure her family always had what they needed. In times of trouble, she was the “go-to” person who would somehow make everything better. Mamaw, as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew her, was full of pride and unconditional love.

Sybil will forever be remembered for her sense of humor, high-pitched squeal of excitement, wonderful cooking (unless it was rolls or biscuits…which were sure to be burned), interest in birds and flowers and love for lipstick, fingernail polish and jewelry. Her purse was always filled with gum and peppermints. She preferred a chocolate candy bar to a meal and treated herself daily.

Sybil was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years; one granddaughter, India Self Pace; one grandson, Jhett Bostick; a brother, Doyle Doster; and a brother-in-law, William “Bill” Black.

Survivors include one daughter, Sherrie Black of Monticello; one brother, Donald Doster (Barbara) of Warren; one grandson, Luke Self of Monticello; two granddaughters, Tonia Sawyer and Kriket Arrington (Marcus) of Monticello; five great-grandchildren, Preston, Shelby, Raegan, Layne and Zane; one great-great grandson, Axel; a sister-in-law, Bennie Wilson Black; a special niece, Boo Black; a special friend and caregiver, Wafer Canada; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you to Dr. Tim Simon, his staff and the Drew Memorial Hospital staff for the excellent care they provided.

Funeral Service will be 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 7 at Stephenson-Dearman Chapel with burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Online guestbook www.stephensondearman.com.

Officiating: Rev. Dennis Dodson. Pallbearers: Andy Black, Clif Turnage, Marcus Arrington, Buster Newman, Greg Doster, and Keith Pace.

Though our world will never be the same, we are all very grateful to have known and been loved by her.
