He was a farmer, former Drew County Tax Assessor, and also worked many years for Safeway and Sunbeam Bread Company. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. J.D. was an avid sportsman and loved quail hunting and working with his bird dogs. He also loved to deer hunt and turkey hunt and took many trips to Texas with his son, Jim, and grandson, Jacob. He was also an avid gardener and cattleman. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Edward West, Lester West, and Bobby West.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Sandra Owens West of Monticello; one son, James Neil "Jim" West of Monticello; one daughter, Deborah West Brooks and husband Bernie of Collierville, TN; five grandchildren, Chris Brooks and wife Kristy, Jeffrey Brooks and wife Cover, Jade Ross and husband Zack, Jamie West Rawls and Jacob West and wife Amber; eight great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Halle, Ace, Gunner, Lucy West, Troupe, Ruth Greer, and Sarah Claire; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service following Covid-19 guidelines will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 25, 2020, at Stephenson-Dearman Chapel with Gary Carter officiating. Online guestbook at www.stephensondearman.com.
