Maumelle, AR Tuesday, January 5, 2021 The last time I saw Aunt Betty, she was asleep in a nursing home bed in Monticello, many years into her illness. This is not the way I will remember her, though. Like her parents and siblings, she was almost always in motion, doing something. She was a great cook, faithfully reproducing my grandmother's versions of dressing and chicken and dumplings and getting adventurous from time to time, usually to a delicious result, although I refused to taste the carrots floating in some kind of tomato-based sauce that she made one Thanksgiving. She was accomplished at sewing and crafts. I still have two Christmas stockings that she made from Pappaw's old neckties and some whimsical plaster Santas she created and gave me after I was out on my own. But she was not all Martha; she had her Mary moments too. I remember her laughter and her love of family. After my mom died, she was good to call at birthdays and out of the blue to see how I was doing. She bought me a river birch that I planted in the front yard of my first house. Although her illness was lengthy, her passing still came as a shock. I am sure that Patty, John, Jordan, and Alex feel her loss deeply. Prayers and much love in the coming days.
