A native of Lake Village, he was preceded in death by his parents, David and Alice Tharp Burgess; two brothers, Ray and Louie Burgess of Monticello.
He worked in management at Burlington Industries, retiring after thirty two years, was a member of Pauline Missionary Baptist Church, and enjoyed going with the youngsters to Bogg Springs Baptist Encampment.
David proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. When in Japan, he earned the rank of sergeant and was detailed as a military policeman and later as instructor. Upon returning to the states, he was appointed as a drill instructor. Following discharge from the Corps, David served his state several years by enlisting in the 216th Medical Company of the Arkansas National Guard.
For twenty one years David served in the Drew County Civil Defense Unit with a group of dedicated men who were willing to respond to emergencies at any hour and do whatever was required. During that time period, he was a registered medical emergency technician and a certified Red Cross instructor.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Andrews Burgess of Monticello; a brother, John Burgess (Ruth) of Robertsdale, AL; three sisters, Frances Streeter (Scott) of Lake Village, Eunice Hackett (Bob) of Monticello and Diane Molina (Leo) of Mayflower; a sister-in-law, Mary Burgess of Monticello; and a very special friend, Danny Brown of Eudora, who came every week during David's lengthy illness and did whatever chores that needed to be done.
Much appreciation is extended to the Hospice Home Care for their excellent care and support.
