He retired from the Department of Corrections as Field Captain after 30 years, was working for Riceland Food in maintenance, less than 90 days and was a 12 year U. S. Army National Guard Veteran. He was the son of Mallie Lankford Sledge of Monticello and the late Earl Sledge.
Other survivors include his wife, Elaine Birdsong Sledge of Tillar; one son, James Preston Sledge of Tillar; two daughters, Courtney Lynn Weatherford and husband, Michael of Tillar and Amanda Jane Sledge of Tillar; four sisters, Brenda McMickle of Russellville, Wendy Frizzle of Clinton, Kathy Woods and husband, Jimmy of Monticello and Janie Sledge of Dermott; five grandchildren.
