William Wells Moffatt, age 94, died Thursday, November 18, 2010 at Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. Born in Monticello, September 2, 1916 to Walter A. Moffatt and Myrtle Wells Moffatt, he was educated in Monticello graduating from high school in 1933 and Arkansas A &M College (now UAM) in 1937.

A WWII veteran, Wells worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Oklahoma prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on the destroyer U.S.S. Woolsey, he received numerous battle stars for combat in the Pacific Theater. In 1946 he returned to Monticello and bought timberland for Ozark Badger Lumber Co. and was a representative of Investor's Syndicate. Wells married Ruth Cherry on November 25, 1950. They settled into their newly built home where they have resided for 60 years. He was devoted to his family and loved nature and the outdoors enjoying bird watching, fishing, quail hunting, tennis, swimming and golf. He was proud to be the last surviving charter member of the Monticello Country Club.

He was a popular soloist for weddings and funerals and a member of the Rotary Quartet for many years. He served as a Quorum Court member for 20 years, board member of Drew Memorial Hospital, and was a director of Union Bank and Trust Co.

Preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Walter, and sister, Minnie May, he is survived by his wife Ruth, daughter, Marsha Daniels (Bill) and sister, Pattie Moffatt all of Monticello, two granddaughters, Natalie Atkins (Justin) of Little Rock and Meredith Daniels of Nashville, Tennessee.

  6. George M. Wells
I read the Monticello newspaper online every once in a while and was totally shocked today to learn of Wells' death. What a great person he was along with his brother and sister Walter and Minnie May. The Moffatts, including Ruth, Pattie and Marsha seem to have a gentleness about them most of us wish we had but few of us seem to acquire.

Mrs. Moffatt, Marsha, Bill, Natalie, Meredith, and Patti,
my prayers are with all of you at this time of loss. Mr. Moffatt was such a person of integrity. Though our families have been close friends for so many years, going back before Marsha and I were even born, I never realized everything that Mr. Moffatt was involved with until reading his obituary. He certainly made his contributions to society. Such an inspiration! He will be missed. If there was any way for me to come to his services, I would, but know that my thoughts will be with you. Love to all!
