Rev. Michael Binns, Sr. age 58, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2011 in Pine Bluff, AR. He was born February 10, 1953 to Flossie and Wilson Wells of Monticello, Arkansas.

Michael graduated from Monticello High School as an honor graduate in 1971. He then graduated from the University of Monticello in 1975 where he received his BA in Choral Music. He continued his studies with the late Marjorie Lawrence of Hot Springs and did graduate work at UALR and the University of Arkansas Fayetteville in counseling and Special Education. In 1993, Michael received his MME from the University of Arkansas Fayetteville in Music.

On November 5, 1978, Rev. Binns was ordained as a Baptist Minister. He attended the Morris Booker Seminary, The Arkansas Baptist Theological Seminary and in 1994, he received his Doctorate of Divinity from the Universal Life Seminary.

At age six, he joined Holmes Chapel Presbyterian Church under the leadership of the late Y.C. Jordan. In 1976, He united with the Morning Star Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. T.S. Skipper with the encouragement of his grandmother, Sister Charlie V. Binns, who was a Deaconess and Mother of Morning Star. He remained a faithful member until 1980, when he accepted the position as pastor of the Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church in Wilmar, Arkansas. He resigned in 2002 and later became an associate minister of Mt. Tabor and was later appointed by Rev. Floyd Daniels, who was pastor at the time, to the position of Minister of Music. He remained as Minister of Music under the current pastoral leadership of Rev. Shay Gillespie, until his death.

In 1975, Mr. Binns began the Monticello Junior High School Choir Program. He directed two concert choirs, two madrigal groups, two girls' ensembles and two boys' ensembles. During this tenure as choir director, he placed over two hundred students in the Southeast Arkansas Junior and Senior All Region Choirs, and placed many students in the Arkansas All State Choir. Mr. Binns choral groups were known for receiving 1st Division ratings at the regional CPA (Choral Performance Assessment) and the state level of competition.

Michael enjoyed the pleasure of judging other choral groups in Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana. He loved his students, and as evidenced by their hard work for him and beautiful gifts he received, they loved him as well.

Michael was a member of the Seark CDA, American Choral Directors Associations, Ark CDA, ADE, MEA and served as the Southeast Regional Chairman. Other accolades he received are as follows: Kiwanis Club chose him as 1995 Teacher of the Year, 1994 Award from the House of Representatives of the Ninth General Assembly, received the award for the 1994-95 Junior and Senior Director of the Year, Monticello Parks and Recreation Commission gave him a citation for nineteen years of service in 1997, the 1998 Award from the House of Representatives of the Eighty-First General Assembly and Union Bank & Trust Co. chose him as the Monticello 1998 Master Educator of the year.

From 1980-2002, Rev. Binns pastored the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Wilmar, where he served as the pianist and organist. He also received the 1999-2000 award for Junior High Director of the Year and the award for 2002-2003 Senior High Director of the Year, was included in the 2004-2005 Who's Who among American Teachers, again received the award for Senior High Director of the Year in both 2006 and 2008 and in 2007 received a House and Senate Citation from Senator Jimmy Jeffress. Michael taught Choral Music for the Monticello School System for 35 years. On May 28, 2010 his retirement became official.

Michael leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Flossie Wells (Wilson) of Monticello; his father, Wilson Wells of Monticello; one son, Michael Binns, Jr. of Bryant; one brother, Larry Wells (Vicki) of Colorado Springs, CO; a nephew, Lawrence Wells of Colorado; an aunt, Bobbie Dunlap (Louis) of Monticello; his uncles, Jewel Binns (Brenda) of Monticello, Calvin Binns (Viola) of Wilmar, Sam Binns, Jr. (Ronnie) of Gary, Indiana; four grandchildren, three god sons, one god-daughter along with a host of cousins, friends, and former students. He also leaves a very devoted Christian friend and cousin, Eric Lamb and family of Conway.

I don't know what to say, I am so sorry to just be learning of his passing. Mr. Binns will always be a large part of the person that I am now. I learned so much more from him than just a love of music, I also learned how to be a polished and joyful person. He had a way of making a concert in Monticello, AR feel like opening night on Broadway. There are so many times I think of him when certain songs play on the radio or on TV and it always makes me smile. I know there is a new special song in heaven, I really hope to hear it someday.

Oh I can't believe your gone so soon in Paradise with Jesus. Lay in His chest and arms feel the love and warmth from HIM. His peace love and safety you are in for all eternity. I will miss seeing you here and there. I will always remember you teaching me my tones in music class. And the year fair was in town me lil Micheal and my sister Trina rode the spider together.
  3. The Family of Arlene Matthews
Our deepest sympathy to the Wells, Dunlap and Binns families. We will continuously keep all of you in our prayers. (Flossie, you and our mother were "best friends forever".) There is nothing that we can say at this time to ease your pain, but God's word says that "He will never put more on you than you can bear." So know that "all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose".

When I think of Michael I think of the smiles and laughter he shared with so many people. Michael and I were classmates and I was very fortunate to make friends with him and other students who move to MHS during the time of a major change and consolidation of the black and white schools; those were very brave young students entering a strange old two story school building that fall. Not only was he talented in band and choir but he was full of great humor and quick come backs. Our friendship continued as we both attended UAM and then for years I saw him around town always with a smile on his way to preach or sing for some group. I will only remember Michael as a friend with a full heart of love and generosity for others. I pray for peace to be found by all family members and your memories of him as a Grandson, Father, and Sibling more important and positive than the last year of his life. God heals our hearts and loves the departed souls.

I am so saddened to learn of your loss in the passing of Micheal Binns. It is a sign of how far we have all come, I think, to say that Michael was my classmate during our senior year in high school, in band and other classes. This was the year 1971, the first year that the schools in Monticello were fully integrated. That seems astonishing to me now. Micheal was a true leader, bright and talented and he was also so kind and befriended me during and after the racial tensions that unfortunately occured that year at the high school. We in the band were fortunate, I think, to have music as a common ground and method for gaining true respect and cooperation with one another. The honors that Micheal recieved speak very strongly of his brillance, talent and hard work. I am so sad to learn that he has passed away; I am sure he is leading a choir of heavenly voices, just as he did here on earth.

So many sweet memories it's almost hard to know where to start! For 6 years he poured his heart and soul into my life. Because that was his way. He didn't just teach you music, he worked daily to teach us about life! I remember spectacular suits, gold jewelry, napkins wrapped around diet cokes, a beautiful booming voice, silent night, I'll be home for Christmas, lots of laughs and sometimes tears, but most of all I just remember him. That sweet calming Mr. Binns. I love you dearly Mr. B
Praying for the family always! All my love

As you have gone on to be with the Lord, we must find a way to accept that you will no longer leave daily inspirational messages on the Internet but we know that you loved God with your whole heart.. The devil did not win this battle Michael. The battle is the Lord's. We pray for the family at this time and know that you have donned your heavenly wings.

  52. PATRAH BENTON
IT HAS TAKEN ME A MOMENT TO GET THE COURAGE TO SIGN THE GUESTBOOK. THIS ALL HAPPENED SO FAST. IM STILL TRYING TO PROCESS THE NEWS, BUT I DONT WANT TO BELIEVE IT. MR. BINNS WAS A WONDERFUL PERSON WITH A KIND HEART. WE SPOKE OFTEN, AND HIS CHOICE OF WORDS ALWAYS UPLIFTED ME. THE THING THAT BOTHERS ME THE MOST IS THE FACT THAT HE SPENT HIS LAST DAYS BEING UNHAPPY AND ILL. GOD NEVER MAKES MISTAKES, SO IM SURE HE HAS GREAT REASONS FOR CALLING THIS ANGEL HOME SO SOON. MY SORROW WONT ALLOW ME TO WRITE MUCH AT THIS TIME, SO I WILL CLOSE BY SAYING "I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU MR. BINNS! THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR LOVE FOR MUSIC WITH ME!" *MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE*

Michael Binns may have gone to a better place, but he will not be forgotten. His life and legacy will be remembered in the hearts, minds and voices of the students he loved and taught for 35 years. I have known Michael for over 40 years and treasure every moment in his presence. He was a perfect gentleman, consummate musician and most of all a wonderful man of God. He always called me his "angel" because I called when he was sick or down and kept his spirits up. Now he is my personal "angel" because he is singing in the heavenly choir and reuniting with his beloved grandmother. His heart may have failed his body, but his heart never failed his family, friends or students. See you again on that heavenly shore my dear friend.
  56. Haleigh Farmer

Mr. Binns has been a part of my life since I was a little girl. I remember him working at Jordan Park pool. He would always engage in pleasant conversation with my late Mother and always had something nice to say. As one of his students, I enjoyed his class EVERYDAY of EVERY YEAR. We had serious talks about life... laughs, tears, jokes, and all a true teacher and mentor should give to a student and friend.
I always wondered about this day. And only wish I could have said one last time how much of a positive impact he had on my life..... Mr. Binns, you will be forever remembered. NO more suffering.... Rest in love.
