I served in the armed forces.
Roger Dale Hatley, age 65 of Monticello, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2014 at his home after a long illness. He was born December 16, 1948 in Drew County the son of the late Thomas Hatley and Willie Mae Winters Hatley. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Hatley, Jr.

He was a U. S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam Era and a member of First Assembly of God Church, in Monticello. Roger was best known for being an over the road truck drive, from coast to coast, Canada, Mexico, and yes even Alaska for 41 years. He saw through the windshield of a big truck this country and all the changes of new roads and people living in different parts of this great country. And let us not forget the cowboy hat, which was his statement wearing and if just fit him and who he was. Roger was a strong man and held up what he needed to do. Home time was a special time and was spent with family and friends. He enjoyed deer hunting and just enjoyed the quiet time in the woods.

So much isn't what he did in life, but the values he left behind. Roger believed in working hard and doing it right, taking care of your family and he did. Most dear to his heart was putting God first in your life, which he did. That is how we will remember Roger in our hearts.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Handke Hatley of Monticello; one son, Dale Hatley & family; three sisters, Mary Ann, Christine and Virginia and their families; Will McMahon, Amber Pluckett, Ann Reaves, William Kugel, Farrah Watson, and all their children who brought so much joy in his life; and a host of cherished friends.

I am so shocked to hear about Roger's passing. Even more shocking was that I just found out about it today 6 days later and long after the funeral. I am so sorry that I missed the funeral and our last goodbye on earth. I know that I will see him again one day in Heaven though.
  7. Charley Hatley
My thoughts and prayers go out to all of Roger's family and friends during this time of loss.
Roger and I are first cousins and we spent a lot of time together during our younger years, hunting together and driving trucks together.
Roger's passion was driving big rigs across country and he was one of the fortunate few that was able to continue his passion for most of his life. He truly cherished every moment and every mile that he spent behind the wheel of his big rig.
As the years have gone by, the amount of time that we were able to spend together lessened but the value of that time increased exponentially. I will forever carry with me the fond memories of our time spent together and I will always miss him.
I know that Roger has left all of his pain and suffering behind as he went to be with the Lord and that he has been welcomed into Heaven by many loved ones who have gone before him.

My condolences to the family of Roger. When I rode a school bus by Roger's house as a young boy, he was always out by the road waving to everyone. He was not in school yet. He always wore a hat. I'm sure he will be missed by a lot friends, including me.

I'm sorry I didn't get by to see you brother before you departed, but I know that you are living in glory with Jesus now. I didn't know you were a Vietnam vet, maybe you'll meet my daddy up there, David Rowe. I will be praying for your wife Karen and family for strength during the sadness and sorrow of missing you. Love in Christ, Tara.
p.s. your old classmate, my father in law, James Daugherty, sends his condolences as well and prayers for the family.
