Virginia Nell Hughes Johnston, age 90 of Monticello, passed away Friday, February 15, 2019 at Belleview Nursing and Rehab in Monticello. She was born May 6, 1928 in Drew County, AR to the late Copeland M. Hughes and Virda Gilliam Hughes.
She was the widow of Harrell Johnston, a retired teacher and librarian and a member of Rose Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She received her BSE from Arkansas A&M College (now UAM) and a degree in Library Science from East Texas State in Commerce, TX. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Copeland Hughes and Virgil Hughes.
Survivors include one son, Glenn Johnston and wife Jeannie of Harrell; one daughter, Linda Rowe and husband Rick of Lake Village; five grandsons, Alan Johnston and wife Jackie, Phillip Johnston and wife Jessica, Wesley Rowe, Cameron Rowe and Ryan Rowe and wife Madison; five great-grandchildren, Anna, Jack, Wyatt, Carley and Palmer; one brother, Rev. Charles Hughes of Estill Springs, TN; brothers-in-law, Larry Johnston and wife Lonelle and Mike Johnston and wife Charlena; sisters-in-law, Jean Foreman and Harold, Kay Johnston and Martha Wood; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 18, 2019 at Stephenson-Dearman Chapel with burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation 5:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
