Betty Louise Hughes
September 16, 1950 - August 24, 2022

Betty Louise Hughes, age 71 of Monticello, passed away after a long illness on Thursday, August 24, 2022 at home surrounded by her family. Betty was born September 16, 1950, in Monticello, AR to the late S.G. Hughes and Thelma Sarah Myhand Hughes.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Joe Hughes and Charlie Hughes. Survivors include a nephew, Marty Hughes of Star City; a niece, Carri Hughes Langley (Mike) and two great nieces, Corri and Calli Langley of Grapevine; and a sister-in-law, Donna Hughes of Monticello.
Although forced into retirement due to her illness in 2018, Ms. Betty was well-known for her work ethic. During her lifetime, mostly working two to three jobs at a time, most residents of Monticello encountered Ms. Betty at some point whether they knew her by name or not. In addition to full time employment at Leisure Lodge and then in the Forestry Building at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, Betty also worked the snack bar at the Monticello Drive-In Movie Theater, as a carhop at the original Breaker location, at the old Drew Theater, and Timberlodge Lanes. Chances are that if you got a snack and a drink while on a date or out with friends in Monticello between 1970 and 2000, it was likely prepared carefully by Ms. Betty Hughes. For many, many years, the first two weeks of deer season, it was Ms. Betty’s joy to cook for “her guys” at Pevey’s Deer Camp. She loved her friends and family deeply, but as her mobility declined, she turned to her beloved trio of dachshunds for companionship. She was a member of Rose Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Rose Hill Cemetery Association. You can sign Betty's guestbook page at www.stephensondearman.com.
