I am a Veteran.Walton Edward Sawyer, Sr.
February 20, 1942 - December 20, 2023

Walton Edward Sawyer, Sr., age 81 of Monticello, passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at his home. He was born February 20, 1942, in Drew County, AR to the late Godfrey Sawyer and Dovie Creighton Sawyer.
He was a retired carpenter, a United States Air Force Veteran and a Baptist. He enjoyed fishing, wood carving, playing the guitar, watching Andy Griffith, drawing and telling wild stories. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn Myers Sawyer; four siblings, Reba Dell Scogin, Barbara Jo Forrest, Greg Sawyer and Kay Crook; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James Brown Myers and Merle Jean McKee Myers.
He is survived by his son, Walton E. Sawyer, Jr. of Monticello; a daughter, Melissa Sawyer of Little Rock; one sister, Janice Sawyer of Oppelo; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Iona Myers of Jacksonville; along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
His wife Gwendolyn passed away on February 4, 2021, and her wishes were to be cremated and placed in the casket with her husband. She was born August 10, 1949, to the late James Brown Myers and Merle Jean McKee Myers. Gwendolyn was a native of Wilmot and a resident of Monticello since 1967. She graduated from Wilmot High School in 1967 and from UAM in 1970 with an Elementary Education Degree. She was a homemaker and member of Wilmot United Methodist Church.
Graveside services for Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Pleasant Springs Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
