Faye Harrod Chandler, 82, passed away on March 10th, 2025, at her home in Chesapeake, Virginia. Born on March 16th, 1942, in Ingalls, Arkansas. Faye was the youngest of eight children born to Ofa and Maggie Harrod. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A dedicated scholar, she graduated from Hermitage High School in 1960 and went on to earn her undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas at Monticello—then known as Arkansas A&M—before continuing her studies to receive a Master of Education from the University of Arkansas. Faye devoted much of her life to teaching advanced mathematics at Monticello High School, where she positively influenced a generation of students with her expertise in algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Her passion for education and commitment to her students left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of learning from her.
Beyond the classroom, Faye was an accomplished athlete and intellectual competitor. She was an excellent tennis player and pursued competitive Bridge with great enthusiasm. She was well on her way to achieving the prestigious rank of Life Master in Bridge before illness made travel to tournaments too difficult. Despite these challenges, she remained an avid player and a teacher of the game she loved. She was also an active and supportive member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Faye was a long-time resident of Monticello, Arkansas, where she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Anthony (Tony). Shortly after Tony’s passing, she moved to Chesapeake, Virginia, to be near family. In Chesapeake, she was a member of Great Bridge United Methodist Church and the Shook Seekers Sunday School class.
Faye is survived by her two sons: John and his wife Patty of Chesapeake, Virginia, along with their daughters, Jordan of Washington, D.C., and Alexandra of Orlando, Florida; and her son William (Bill) and his wife Christina of Cumberland, Maine, along with their sons, Anthony and Evan. As a loving grandmother, Faye cherished time spent with her grandchildren and took great pride in their accomplishments. Faye is also survived by her sisters-in-law: Phyllis (Phe) Chandler Parks and Judy Chandler Starr of Conway, Arkansas. Faye leaves many nieces and nephews with whom she was very close. She also leaves behind a very special friend in Vincent Donnally with whom she shared many wonderful times over the past decade.
A celebration of life will be held in Monticello, Arkansas at 11:00 a.m. on April 11, 2025, at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home following a private graveside service at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to the “Anthony T. and Faye Chandler Scholarship” at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Donations can be made via the link https://www.uamont.edu/ (Choose the Give button in the top right. In the “Please Designate my Gift to” drop down choose “Other” and put “Anthony T. and Faye Chandler Scholarship in the next box) This Scholarship which was endowed in 2007 following Tony’s death has already provided much needed financial support to UAM students studying mathematics and nursing.
Faye’s legacy lives on through the many lives she touched as a mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, educator, and competitor. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
