Harvey W. Thomasson, Jr., age 89 of Monticello, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2015 at Belleview Estates Rehab and Care Center in Monticello. He was born July 30, 1926 in Drew County, AR to the late Harvey W. Thomasson, Sr. and Lella Owens Thomasson.
He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, owner and operator of Harvey Thomasson Dry Goods and Notions (which later became Thomasson's), and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, William Owens Thomasson, Sr.; and one sister, Marjory Thomasson Wellenberger.
After graduation from Monticello High School in 1944, Harvey honorably served our country for two years in the U.S. Army stationed at Camp Robinson. Harvey devoted much of his life to bettering the Monticello, Drew County, and south Arkansas communities and its citizens. He was very active in the youth and music ministries at First United Methodist Church in Monticello, and a member of the Monticello Rotary Club for many years, having served as its past president and secretary, and honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. Harvey was also a member of the Order of United Commercial Travelers and numerous other civic organizations and is perhaps best remembered for his dedication to the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Indeed, for over 60 years, Harvey worked with Cub and Boy Scouts and was the longtime Cub Scout Pack Master for Pack 69 in Monticello (flipping countless scouts upside down and pinning their bobcat badges!); he was a lifetime member of the DeSoto Council Executive Board and was presented with the Silver Beaver Award for his outstanding service to scouting.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Jane Thomasson of Monticello; one niece, Tricia Cobb and husband Chad of Houma, La; six nephews, John Wellenberger of White Hall, Bob Wellenberger of North Little Rock, Paul C. Wellenberger and wife Cindy of Fairfield Bay, Peter Wellenberger of Dumas, Will Thomasson and wife Susan of Monticello and Andrew Thomasson and wife Rebecca of San Antonio, TX; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral Service will be 3:00 p.m. Thursday, October 1 at First United Methodist Church in Monticello. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to: First United Methodist Church Stained Glass Windows Fund, 317 South Main St., Monticello, AR 71655. Online guestbook www.stephensondearman.com.
