Johnnie Slingerland, age 84 of Star City, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at his home. He was born February 17, 1932 in Hot Springs, AR to the late Frank Slingerland and Mamie Conover Slingerland. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Barton; a granddaughter, Melissa Anderson; and one great-granddaughter, Madison Sorrells.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, the owner/operator of Slingerland Furniture Store in Lincoln County and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Clark County. He met his wife while attending Henderson State University and raised seven children together. They moved to Star City in 1976. For much of his life, Johnnie enjoyed selling furniture. He took pleasure in talking to anyone who would listen, which in turn made him a successful salesman. Johnnie was somewhat a jokester, pulling ponytails, then ducking to blame it on someone none the wiser. He was a smart kind, and cunning man who loved to laugh, talk, and eat. He was greatly loved by so many and will be missed immensely.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Molly Williams Slingerland of Star City; two sons, John Slingerland and Terry Slingerland both of Star City; four daughters, Mary (Phillip) Irons of Star City, Annette (Roger) Johnson of Hot Springs, Brenda Slingerland of Star City and Dianna (Kelly) Goins also of Star City; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside Service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Holly Springs Cemetery with Rev. John David Ryker officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday evening at funeral home. Online guestbook at www.stephensondearman.com.
