Martha Jean Halligan St. John, age 92 of Monticello, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Belleview Nursing and Rehab in Monticello.
Jean or “Miss Jean”, as she was called by her friends, was born February 17, 1924, in Warren, AR to the late Lige and Ila White Halligan. She married Amos Clifton St. John on October 18, 1947. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Monticello for over 60 years and was a past vice president of Union Bank & Trust Co., Monticello where she had been employed for thirty years, having retired in 1985.
She was a charter member of The Town & Country Garden Club which was organized as the College Heights Garden Club on September 1960. The club’s name was later changed to Town and Country Garden Club. She had a deep love for nature and often said she had rather be outside than inside.
She was preceded in death by her husband, “Kip” as he was called; her parents; two brothers, Howard Halligan and Kirby Halligan; and one sister, Bera Halligan Gadberry. She is survived by two sons, Clifton Scott St. John and wife Carol Ann of Monticello and Nicholas Spencer St. John and wife Kristi of Crossett; three grandchildren, Anna Kate St. John of Monticello, Jacob Clifton St. John and Caleb Dale St. John of Crossett.
Funeral Service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 6, 2017 at First Baptist Church, 413 North Main, Monticello with Rev. Dennis Dodson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church, 413 North Main St. Monticello, AR 71655.
