Send Flowers Send Flowers
Ted Hammett was born in Tubingen, Germany, on March 12, 1951, where he was adopted at the age of five by his parents, Greig and Elby (Crosby) Hammett from Ruston, Louisiana. He died at his home in Monticello, Arkansas, on Monday, March 29, 2021, after battling cancer for a short time.

Ted is survived by his wife of forty-one years, Becky (Renner) Hammett; his children, Brittney Schrick (Zach) of Conway, Arkansas, and Brett Hammett of Vancouver, Washington; and his granddaughters, Abbey, Lily, and Sadie Schrick of Conway, Arkansas.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Susan (Hammett) Fowler.

He was a Christian, active in the United Methodist Church for many years. Ted attended Louisiana Tech University, in Ruston, Louisiana, where he was a member of ROTC and became a pilot. There, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1974, after which he served in the United States Air Force. Following his stint serving his country, Ted started his professional accounting career working in the oil and gas industry in Houston, Texas. In 1984, Ted completed his Master of Science degree in Accounting at Sam Houston State University, in Huntsville, Texas; and in 1985 he became a Certified Public Accountant licensed in the State of Texas. In 1987, Ted and his family relocated to Ruston, Louisiana. He returned to Louisiana Tech University to serve in the position of Research Contracts Administrator while he pursued his Doctor of Business Administration degree in Accounting, which he completed in 1994.

His first faculty position was at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma, from 1994 to 2000. In the fall of 2000, Ted began teaching accounting at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM). At the time of his death, Ted was an Associate Professor of Accounting at UAM. After his family, Ted's passions were teaching his "kids" accounting and collecting die cast model cars for display in his office. He enjoyed being a faculty sponsor for Institute of Managerial Accountants (IMA) student organization at UAM, as well as participating in the organization's service projects and social events. Ted also loved to provide parade transportation for pageant queens by driving his convertible in area events. Ted was a long-time member of the Rotary Club of Monticello, where he served as Treasurer for many years.

The family wishes to thank Ted's colleagues and friends for their steadfast kindness and support during his illness. Heartfelt thanks are also extended to his excellent caregivers from Arkansas Hospice. Ted has donated his body for use in medical research.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Hammett Family Scholarship at UAM, which will benefit students in the School of Business. To give, send to UAM Foundation Fund, P. O. Box 3520, Monticello, AR 71656. Online guestbook at www.stephensondearman.com.

Ted was a wonderful son-in-law. He was a kind and caring person with a great since of humor. We will miss him very much. Becky, Brett,
Brittney and family-- please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Just hold onto all the sweet memories you have of your loved one and they will help you get through this difficult time. One of my favorite memories of Ted was when he and Becky came to visit us, I would cook German food for him. He was born in Germany and he liked German food. I enjoyed cooking it for him.

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to know and work with Dr. Ted Hammett since he came to UAM in 2000. We will miss Ted and his dedication to the accounting program, to his students, and to the IMA student organization he co-sponsored. He was a warm and caring person with a great sense of humor. We won't see him driving up to the BBC parking lot in his beloved convertible anymore, but each of the Business faculty has one of his die-cast metal cars to remember him by, and we will think of him often in the coming years.

It was a blessing to know Ted, as my professor and then as a colleague. The days ahead will be hard, but I will continue to pray for Becky and the rest of the family.

I worked with Ted for two years. We wrote a paper together too. He was a good man and a good friend. I was part of the committee that interviewed and hired Ted at UAM. We kept in touch over the years. May he rest in peace. My deepest condolences to Becky and the rest of his family.

I was finishing my senior year of high school when my sister Becky met Ted at church and started dating him. Within a few months he became my brother-in-law and instantly fit in with the family. I have many happy memories of playing cards and Monopoly with Becky and Ted. He was one shrewd Monopoly player. Ted was a natural teacher and he taught me how to drive a stick shift - mostly with patience. I admired his perseverance as he worked to become a CPA and then earn his DBA and become a professor. He was a great brother-in-law and a great husband, father and grandfather. I'm counting on him to save me a spot at the game table in heaven. Love and prayers from all of us in Omaha.

I am very sorry to hear about Ted's passing. He was a very fine man and an excellent colleague. I was at UAM when we hired Dr. Hammett to join us in the business school. I will always cherish the memories of the time we worked at UAM. We wrote a paper on Southeast Arkansas together. My deepest condolences to Becky and the rest of his family.

Dr Hammett was one of the finest gentlemen I have had the pleasure of meeting. Losing him is a loss to the students of UAM school of business and the citizens of Monticello. May your heart find peace Mrs. Becky. Without the two of yall I would not have made it through college and for that I thank yall.

Dr. Hammett was one of the most unique people I have ever met. The first time I walked into his accounting class, he had no idea what he was in for dealing with me. He became more than just a professor to me; he became one of my friends. We loved poking fun at each other and fake arguing just for the fun of it. I loved getting to walk with him back to the BBC from Chick fil a where he was having lunch with Mrs. Becky. I would even carry his drink back to his office for him. I loved going in his office and having him tell me about the different cars he had and then him getting onto me for trying to touch one on them. He also had a spectacular tie collection and we all loved asking him about the tie he had on each day. He would always tell us "say yes" in class when he thought we weren't paying attention and that became his catchphrase. Dr. Hammett was my favorite professor and he is a big reason that I'm an auditor today. I am so very thankful for the time I got to spend with him and I cannot express how thankful that I am for him helping me forward my professional career and get to the place I am today.
