Thank you all for sharing these feelings and stories. Although I had never met Mike in person, we spoke on the phone and wrote each other often. It is with great pleasure that I have had the opportunity to "get to know him" through all of you. It meant so much to me to meet many of you last weekend. I never realized over the years that he had so many people who loved and watched out for him.

He never did see me in person, nor I him, but I now feel closure about who he was after reading and hearing from all of you - his real family.

    Thanks and with great affection,
    Marilyn (Mike's daughter)

THIS IS LATE FOR MIKE. JUST LIKE THE OTHER NICE POST I READ FOR HIM ITS A SHAME HE COULDN'T READ THESE A FEW DAYS AGO ISN'T IT?WE NEVER KNOW WHEN WE SEE SOMEONE IT MAY BE THAT LAST TIME FOR THEM. YES I MEAN ME TOO. BENNIE KNEW MIKE BEFORE I DID. WHEN I MET HIM HE MADE ME LAUGH AND I ENJOYED BEING AROUND HIM. WHEN BENNIE DID SOMETHING LITTLE FOR HIM HE ALWAYS WANTED TO PAY AND IF WE DID NOT LET HIM HE WOULD COME BACK A FEW DAYS LATER AND LAY A SACK DOWN AND LEAVE WITH SOME KIND OF MEAT IN IT. WHAT A GREAT GREAT GUY. THE LAST TIME I SAW HIM WAS SEVERAL YEARS BACK , AFTER BENNIE GOT DOWN SICK, AND HE WALKED BY ME WITH HIS HEAD DOWN. IT WAS IN WAS IN WAL-MART I THINK. I CALLED HIM AND HE STOPPED. IWENT TO HIM AND ASK HIM HOW HE WAS AND HE WAS SO DOWN. I FELT SO SORRY FOR HIM. HE LOOKED AS IF HE HAD BEEN CRYING. HE SAID THAT THE WHOLE WORLD WAS AFTER HIM AND HE HAD TO TAKE CARE OF SO MANY. I DON'T THINK HE KNEW WHO I WAS. I ASK IF I COULD PRAY FOR HIM. HE RAISED HIS HEAD AND I TOOK HIS SHAKEY HANDS AND ASK GOD TO HELP HIM AND TO CALM HIM. THAT WAS THE LAST TIME I EVER TALKED TO HIM. YES HE WILL BE MISSED AND I HOPE IF EVER I SEE SOMEONE THAT NEEDS A FRIEND NO MATTER WHERE NO MATTER WHO NO MATTER COLOR NO MATTER SMELL NO MATTER RICH NO MATTER POOR I WILL STOP AND TAKE TIME HOLD THEIR HAND BECAUSE WE NEVER KNOW ..IT MAY BE THE LAST TIME WE GET THE CHANCE....SO IF GOD PUTS ME THERE I PRAY I WON'T WALK AWAY.

He had such a grip! I always enjoyed talking to Mike and was so sorry to hear of his passing. I want his family to know how well thought of he was. Rest in Peace Mike.

I am so sorry to read of Mike's passing in the paper. I had not seen him in years and have wondered so much about him and the othere Presbyterian Home kids.

He wrote a note of poetry when my daughter was born in 1965 in Monticello. It was very sweet and I still have it.

I enjoyed reading the other condolences by the Home kids. So nice to know where you are now.

RIP Mike ----you are not forgotten and will not be. Thank you for the service in the Vietnam war. So sorry you did not have peace afterwards.

I only knew Mike from the days at the Waff-L-Inn & he was one of my customers at Tobacco Superstore--Mike was always nice to me & well mannered & soft spoken. I know he loved animals, one day a little stray kitten was in behind the coke box when the tobacco store was by the Waff-L-Inn & some of us coaxed it out with some food--Mike took it & later found another home for it. may you rest in peace Mike!!

One of my first memories of Mike was looking out the window and seeing him sitting on top of the little house down by the pavilion--everyone just said "That's Mike"--and after I got to know him I understood. what "That's just Mike" meant. We can never fully understand why lives are sometimes so troubling but can only pray that God has brought Peace to Mike now. We all grew up as brothers and sisters at Vera Lloyd and our lives have been forever changed because of this bonding.
My prayers go to his family and extended family.

Mike could make a great novel. His life was one that many of us could never imagaine.

After he got to the Home he became a person all us younger guys admired... # 22... on the Football Field.

I will never forget him taking the ball while 3 defenders were going to down the ball then...a streak came between them,,, and Mike had all the Billy Fans on their Feet. ( That was the typical Mike " no fear" )

Not only did he serve our country in Army Airborne Mike also Played Tennis for the Army. He was so proud as he walked into my parents home in Chapel Hill when he was iplaying a Match at Fort Bragg.

As I see his daughter, Marilyn, I see his legacy and how he gave back the world such a wonderful gift.

God Bless you Mike and all the goodness you brought this world, that troubled you so.
  25. Sharon Parker-Hayden

I am sure that Mike never knew how many lives he affected or how many people have loving memories of him. I have not seen him in many years, but I did think of him often--whenever someone did something he used to do, etc. I am sorry for your loss. I know he is looking down at all of us with satisfaction that there are so many more of us than he thought there would be!
  27. Terrye Davis
I knew you for most of my life. I knew you through your good days and bad. I remember you telling me the story of how you were just a little boy alone in the darkness but still held onto the light. You held on to that light many times again in your life. Now you are finally at peace and free from your pain. R.I.P. friend.
  28. Faye (Sloan) Stewart

You were so full of life!!! You always had a smile on your face and kind words for your friends. You are/were a very special friend to me as well as my next door neighbor. You were always there for me and I was always there for you. BOO...you watched out for me and I watched out for you. It seemed as tho you were invincible...your time was never supposed to end. I am still in disbelief as I look across the road and see things as they were before Monday. I still see things as they were...Nap and Babygirl out patroling the yard and keeping you safe, your Ford Escape waiting on you to make your daily voyage and your lights inside the house and on the porch..waiting on your return. I was not only your neighbor but your close friend. I was here for you at any time...day or night...from fixing your favorite meal to helping you in any way I can. I love you Mike...BOO...and know that you are no longer hurting but I sure do miss you and the way that you used to make me laugh!!!! REST IN PEACE MY SPECIAL FRIEND!!!!! I know that you are in Heaven and are no longer hurting and that gives me peace of mind and heart. I know that I will see you again but I sure do miss seeing you every day!!!!! I LOVE YOU BOO!!!!!!! 38. Denise
Anyone who knew Mike knows he was a unique person. There was noone else in the world like him. He was really nice to me. In the past few years he came to our church when he was able (Rose Hill Cumberland Presbyterian). We tried to make sure he knew when we had potlucks so he could get a good meal that he didn't have to cook for himself. I think he enjoyed the fellowship even more than the food. He was kind enough to share his stories with me. They were seldom filled with joy (He had a tough life.), but his stories told so much about how he became the man he was. I respected him for doing the best he knew to do, the best he was able to do.
I will miss him. I considered him a friend.
  39. James Brown

Dearest BOO...My precious neighbor and friend...We love you dearly and are saddened that your time on this earth has come to an end but we are at peace knowing that you are finally at peace as well and that you are now pain free. You lived your life to the fullest and gained many friends and loved ones throughout your journey in this life. You came into my life a long time ago and our friendship blossomed. You gave so much to so many without asking anything for yourself in return. Your service to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is forever honored and appreciated!!! Thank you so much for the gift of your service and time to keep this country free and safe!!! It will never be forgotten!! I am so glad that you were our neighbor as it deepened our friendship and closeness. I loved it when you would join us for supper, fellowship and some "old-timey" guitar pickin and singin!! We loved having you in our home and I sure did enjoy cooking for you!!! I am truly thankful for your friendship and love!!! We miss you BOO tremendously but find a peace that passes all understanding....knowing that you are in Heaven and that you are no longer in pain and suffering. We also know that one day soon, we will have a glorious reunion with you and Father God!!!! We love you deeply and dearly BOO!!!! ...Randy and Donna!!!!!!!!!

I first met Mike as a bank customer and over the years learned alot about him and his life. He was a very unique individual with a kind heart. Even on his worst days he could find something to laugh about. There were many times in my office that we laughed over the smallest things.
