Send Flowers Send Flowers
Sue Hendricks Cathey was born August 29, 1935, at Belfast, in Grant County, but moved, with her family, when she was two years old to Little Rock, Arkansas. She died August 17, 2011, at Baptist Health Extended Care Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. Sue worked for forty years for Southwestern Bell Telephone/AT&T in public relations and retired January 1, 1991, as Area Manager, External Relations. She lived and worked in Little Rock until 1984 when she was transferred to Pine Bluff, where she lived until 1991. Upon retirement, Sue moved, with her husband James, to Monticello where she has made her home since. In Little Rock, she was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church, then attended Wood Avenue ARP Church in Monticello where her husband is organist and choir director.
By Sue's own admission, her special talent was organization. She loved to throw both planned and impromptu parties for her many friends and would often call friends at 5:00 p. m. and say "Come for wine and appetizers at 5:30 p. m." Sue's friends were legion, but she was especially close to a group of friends called "The John Adams Society" with whom she spent many happy hours.
Whether Sue lived in Little Rock, Pine Bluff, or Monticello, she threw herself into the life of the community. She was an active member for many years of BPW and was named Woman of the Year in both Little Rock and Pine Bluff. Sue was also named Monticello/Drew County Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year. Because of her job, she was an active participant in the political life of various towns in Southeast Arkansas. Sue was passionate about the arts and was a strong supporter of Southeast Arkansas Concert Association and, as a founder of the Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestra, was one of the people who signed the Articles of Incorporation when the symphony was formed. Sue also loved to collect artwork of local artists and was quick to point out in her home the pieces of local art and would tell you a little about the artist.
Sue is survived by her husband, James, of Monticello; two daughters, Lesa (Brooks) Handly, of Little Rock, and Traci (Michael) Walls, of Pine Bluff; two brothers, Herman (Willene) Moore, of Jackson, MS; and James C. (Anita) of Hot Springs, AR; and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Memorials may be made to Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestra, Box 8725, Pine Bluff, AR, 71611.
Sue's family wishes to thank the personnel of Baptist Health Extended Care Hospital in Little Rock for the care she received there over the last ten weeks. Additionally, appreciation goes to the group of doctors who was responsible for her care during her illness, especially Dr. David Jones, of Little Rock.

    When life for me becomes more than I can bear, I fall back on memories of good times, which always outweigh bad times. I learned this from scripture:

    The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
    He alone holds my lot.
    The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    yea, I have goodly heritage (Psalm 16:5-6).

    I hope these words help you make it through your loss. I am blessed to have been able to care for you and Sue in your time of need.

    James,
    My sympathy to you and your family upon the loss of Sue. Monticello will miss her.

    Do not stand at my grave and weep
    I am not there. I do not sleep.
    I am a thousand winds that blow.
    I am the diamond glints on snow.
    I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
    I am the gentle autumn rain.
    When you awaken in the morning's hush
    I am the swift uplifting rush.
    Of quiet birds in circled flight.
    I am the soft stars that shine at night.
    Do not stand at my grave and cry;
    I am not there. I did not die.

  22. Sarah Blackmon
    Deepest sympathy is extended to James and all the family. Sue touched many lives in very positive ways through her friendship, her leadership and participation in the community, in organizations such as Seark Concert Association and Pine Bluff Symphony, her joy in opening her home to benefit others such as Junior Auxiliary, Music Club, Christmas parade and others. We shall miss her, but perhaps there is comfort in knowing that the communities in which she lived and the people who knew her are better BECAUSE THEY KNEW SUE.

    Where do I begin...

    Let me just say that she was one of few women that I feared. She knew how to put you back into your place and she always knew what place you needed to be. I enjoyed the family meetings in her home in LR - Christmas, Thanksgiving, birthdays, etc. I was fascinated how Monica and her could feed off each other whether they were mad at you or loved you to death. I tried my best to stay on the "loving" side. Jan usually kept me on a short rope when things were getting "hairy" in the family. Thanks Jan!

    Our prayers for all the family. She will be missed but not forgotten. Our love to you all

    Dennis and Linda
