She began work at an early age, spending most of her years working at the Advance Monticellonian until her retirement. She gave her life to Christ at an early age at Mt. Pleasant A.M.E. Church. She served as a Trustee, Steward, Usher and Church Treasurer for many years. She was a faithful member until her health failed her and yet her heart was still wrapped in the work of the church.
She leaves to cherish her memories, a devoted son, Hubert A. C. Bassett of Los Angeles, CA and Cornelius (Debra) Bassett of Monticello; two sister-in-laws, Bernice Brooks and Mary Vern (Shelvis) Thompson of Monticello; two brother-in-laws, D.S. Swift of Monticello and Roy Chester Swift of Pine Bluff; one cousin, Mr. J.C. Goodman, who was like a brother; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend, Mrs. Maxine (Don) Ridgell and many other friends.

Monticello, AR Thursday, March 27, 2014 The Death of Mrs. Mary Hedwood is most definitely not a Blind Alley that is leading this most remarkable Woman of Integrity into a state of nothingness, for Mrs. Mary Loved God and served him so well that the living , the dead or the unborn could have served him any better. She was a firm dedicated Christian Woman and I will forever Cherish her for firmness, care, respect give over the 43 years I have known her. Yes she loved God and she passes from mortality into immortality into the hands/arms of Jesus Christ. Family rest assured all is well.Marilyn Vincent

Warren, AR Monday, March 24, 2014 Whenever I visited my mother at the Woods, she always took the time to ask about Dad and Mom. Mom would always light up and throw up her right index finger and shake it at her from side to side as a way of acknowledgement. It is always hard to see the ones you have come to know, care about, love and respect pass on. It is also a good feeling to know that you did or said something to make their day a little brighter when they were feeling blue. May God be with her family during this time.
