Send Flowers Send Flowers
Mrs. Mary Louise Yocum Busby, age 86, died Saturday, April 23, 2011 in her hometown of Monticello, AR. She was a resident of Monticello for over 50 years and was known and loved by many.

Mrs. Busby, also known as "Ms. Louise," "Momma," and "Granny," was born in North Little Rock on August 20, 1924 to John William and Annie Melissa Yocum. She attended North Little Rock High and often told stories about her days as a Charging Wildcat. She moved to Monticello in 1957, where she began her life as a long time resident that touched many lives.

Mrs. Busby was a long time teacher in the Monticello school district and was widely known and cherished for the teaching and assistance she gave to many students. She could not visit a local establishment without someone stopping to hug her or thank her for her work. She was an avid reader and loved watching the Arkansas Razorbacks play football and basketball.

Of the things that mattered most to her was her family. She was the mother of seven children, with which she tirelessly gave of her time and herself. Mrs. Busby was at every sports game, band concert and dance recital for the children during their school years and continued that effort for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. A dedicated member of First Baptist Church, she once shared that she prayed for each of her children and their families every night. Her grandchildren adored her, making sure to visit regularly or to share a lunch at City Drug, one of her favorite places. Some of her happiest times were when she was surrounded by her family at holidays, telling stories of the children growing up and laughing at the days of raising seven children.

Mrs. Busby was preceded in death by her mother and father John William and Annie Melissa Yocum, brother Clyde Frye, and son Jeffrey Lynn Busby. She is survived by her children: Pat Akin and husband George of Monticello; Kelton Busby, Jr. and wife Betty of Monticello; Susan Wooldridge of Rogers; Dr. Bo Busby and wife Nena of Pine Bluff; Bill Busby and wife Roselyn of Monticello; Melissa Claycomb and husband Sonny of Conway; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves many friends who love her.

"Her children arise and call her blessed. Many women do noble things but you surpassed them all. Honor her for all her hands have done and let her works bring her praise at the city gates." Proverbs 31: 28-29,31.

    Granny,

I miss you more and more everyday. You are the best grandmother a person could have asked for. I'll never forget you and I think about you all the time. I miss coming by and seeing you and talking to you on the phone and I know you are watching over me. It seems like you've been gone forever. I will never forget about you and I will always love you. Thanks for always being there for me and being the great person you were. You are the best. I love you.
  3. Nancy Jackson Chacon
I am so saddened by your loss. As with many others who have shared a few words, I remember your family very fondly, as a part of my growing up, in many different situations over the years. I only have the best of memories of each and every one of you, and especially of your mother. I know that my mother admired her very much as well. The loss of a loved one is so difficult; the loss of a parent almost unbearable at times. I share your grief and wish the best for each and every one of you throughout this time and your future.
  4. Ron and Lynne Beeles
We are so sorry for your loss. We have such fond memories of her and the love she had for all of you. We cannot tell the story of the birth of our older son without including the part in which we left our baby shower at her house to go straight to the hospital to have Shannon two hours later. (She kept telling me I was in labor, and I kept reminding her the doctor had told me that afternoon that it would still be two more weeks!) Ron has special memories of his first years of coaching with so many young Monticello men, including Bo, BIll, Jeff, and Robert, and of working with Kelton. He also felt fortunate to get to work on the same campus with Mrs. Busby. I also recall the countless hours spent visiting with her in the stands and bleachers at ball games as we cheered for the Billies. She was a great lady! Our prayers are with you.
  5. Susan Bray Davis
She was a blessing to know for many years and will be missed.

I spent many days with the Busbys whom also always made me feel like family no matter what day it was. Mrs. Busby always shared her love of family and very large extended family with everyone. I'll never know how she put up with all of Jeff and my antics ~ I can see her standing at the backdoor now, telling us just what she thought about what we getting ready to do!
She was one of a kind. Love is who she was and what she did.

    Dear Busby Family,

I will always remember Ms. Busby standing outside her classroom door, just inside the entrance of MJHS. Every time I saw her, I would say "Hey Granny", and she would reply "Hey Todd Hall, (she always called me by my full name) don’t be late for class". She knew I had a tendency for being tardy!

She was a precious lady and I feel privileged to have known her and to call her "Granny Busby".

Mrs. Busby was one of the first teachers to "inspire" me. She taught us how to think and put those thoughts on the page. I will never forget when, in the 7th grade English class, she said: "I want to teach you to think. If you learn to think and express yourself you will be able to hire someone who can correct your punctuation." I send my love to all the family and remind you simply tomorrow is Easter!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I LOVED Ms. Busby. She was my all-time favorite teacher in school. 7th grade English. What a treasure!! I loved running into her when I would be visiting in Monticello. I certainly feel a sense of the loss of a part of my "growing up" years. Prayers of peace to you all.

Sorry for your loss. I went by to visit her about 3 weeks ago. So glad I did. She has always been one of my favorite friends.
