He graduated Drew High School and later enlisted with the United States Navy, serving four years. He united with Pilgrim Rest A.M.E. Church at a young age. Robert married Helen Jackson and to this union two children were born, Robert Jr., and Vickie, also, Barbra Williams (Lois). Later years, Robert again wanted to serve his country and enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he retired. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Bassett and Verline Phillips Bassett, three sisters, Georgia Bassett-Moore, Joyceline Bassett and Edna Lowery and one brother, Milton Bassett.
Survivors include his three children, Robert Bassett, Jr. and Vickie Bassett-Estes (Rod) of Texas and Barbra Williams of Monticello; a step daughter, Toni Corbin of Texas; two brothers, W. C. (Willie) Bassett of California and Roy (Debra) Bassett of Monticello; three sisters, Mary Hedwood, Verlester Meads and Linda Bassett, all of Monticello; god-sister, Patsy Williams of Monticello; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a great many friends.
